Guinea-Bissau’s long-serving coach Baciro Cande will be departing from his role when his contract ends next month.

The decision comes after the country’s football federation announced that they will not be extending the 56-year-old’s deal, following the team’s group-stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Djurtus (Wild Dogs) finished at the bottom of Group A after losing all three of their games.

Cande had been appointed by the West Africans in March 2016 and had led the side to qualification for four successive Nations Cup finals. However, Guinea-Bissau has failed to secure a win in 12 matches at the tournament, stretching back to their debut in 2017 in Gabon.

Cande is the latest coaching casualty from the 2023 edition of the finals in Ivory Coast, joining the ranks of other departing coaches such as Egypt boss Rui Vitoria, Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi, Gambia’s Tom Saintfiet, Ghana’s Chris Hughton, Tunisia’s Jalel Kadri, and Ivory Coast boss Jean-Louis Gasset.
