Ian Gelder, known for his role as Kevan Lannister in the popular fantasy series Game of Thrones, has passed away at the age of 74.
The British actor had a long and successful career that included roles in Torchwood, His Dark Materials, Doctor Who, Snatch, and The Bill.
Gelder’s death came five months after being diagnosed with bile duct cancer, as confirmed by his husband and fellow actor Ben Daniels on Instagram. Daniels praised Gelder as a “wonderful actor” and as his “absolute rock” throughout their 30-year partnership.
He expressed admiration for Gelder’s bravery in facing his illness and mentioned that he had stopped working to provide care for him during his final months.
Describing Gelder as the “kindest, most generous-spirited, and loving human being,” Daniels acknowledged the impact his late partner had on everyone who worked with him. Gelder appeared in five seasons of Game of Thrones as Kevan Lannister and recently guest-starred in an episode of the BBC One detective series Father Brown.
Bile duct cancer affects the bile ducts, which are small tubes connecting organs in the digestive system such as the liver and gall bladder.
Symptoms of this type of cancer can include jaundice, itchy skin, changes in bowel movements, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, high temperature, and abdominal pain.
