The world is in mourning as news broke that Russian opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, died in prison at the age of 47.

The Federal Prison Service reported that Navalny had been feeling unwell and lost consciousness while on a walk. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was unable to be revived and succumbed to his condition.

Navalny, a fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sentenced to 19 years in prison on charges of extremism.

After being moved to a “special regime” penal colony, located above the Arctic Circle, his allies decried the transfer as an attempt to silence him.

The conditions in this remote region are notorious for harsh winters and are reminiscent of the Soviet gulag prison-camp system.

His imprisonment began in January 2021 following his return to Moscow from Germany, where he had been recovering from a nerve agent poisoning that he blamed on the Kremlin.

Before his arrest, Navalny was known for his opposition to official corruption and his efforts to organize anti-Kremlin protests. He was also known for running for public office and received three prison sentences, which he consistently rejected as politically motivated.

Despite setbacks and physical assaults, Navalny remained devoted to the cause and navigated through the dangers with a sardonic wit. His return to Russia in certain arrest displayed his unwavering courage in confronting the power of the Kremlin.

Born in Butyn, just outside Moscow, Navalny became known for his focus on exposing corruption in Russia’s political and business circles. He was convicted of embezzlement in 2013, which he labeled as a politically motivated prosecution, and spent time in prison but was eventually given a suspended sentence.

Navalny’s popularity soared after the 2015 assassination of Boris Nemtsov, another charismatic politician. His influence continued to grow, posing a significant challenge to Putin’s authority.

Throughout his political struggle, Putin consistently avoided mentioning Navalny by name, using vague references to downplay his importance to the opposition. Despite Putin’s attempts to diminish him, Navalny’s impact was profound and far-reaching.
