The Ghana International School (GIS) recently wowed audiences with their Ghanaian adaptation of the classic film, “The Sound of Music”. This beloved 1965 film, originally set in Austria, tells the story of Maria, an aspiring nun who becomes a governess for a widowed naval captain and his seven children.

The GIS adaptation, set in Ghana, incorporated Ghanaian languages and culture into the play. They even reinterpreted famous songs like ‘Favourite Things’ by incorporating Ghanaian foods and snacks such as ‘waakye’ and ‘gari soakings’.

The performance received rave reviews from the audience, with Elise Jensen shining as Maria and the children, played by Gabrielle Asibe, Eden Hutton-Mills, Jed Humphrey Ackumeh, Aryahi Pakti, Adabelle Otoo, and Ekow Yawson, delivering outstanding performances. Sedem Hiadzi also impressed as Captain George Gbeho, the strict military father.

Despite not being professional singers, the cast dedicated months to training and it paid off. The play’s party scene featured guests in traditional African wear dancing to Highlife music, culminating in a Ghanaian-themed wedding with a cultural troupe from Labone Senior High School and assistance from Accra Girls Senior High School.

Proud parents and students showered the cast with applause and praise, with the play showing for the final time on March 20 at the National Theatre. This adaptation of “The Sound of Music” showcased the talent and creativity of the GIS students, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of watching it.
