Renowned coach JE Sarpong has called on the Ghanaian government to dissolve the committee formed by the Ghana Football Association to find a new coach for the national team in the wake of their disappointing performance at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

After Ghana’s untimely exit from the tournament, the GFA sacked coach Chris Hughton, marking the first time in history that the team has been eliminated consecutively from the AFCON. Subsequently, a five-member committee was set up to search for a replacement for Hughton.

JE Sarpong has urged the government to demand a comprehensive report on Ghana’s dismal showing at the AFCON. He also criticized the GFA for hastily trying to appoint a new coach without providing any report to the relevant authorities.

Speaking to Peace FM, Sarpong stated, “The FA is hiding behind FIFA’s regulations, claiming that government interference in football administration will result in a ban. I don’t believe that’s the case because people are hiding behind it and using it as an excuse. The government should have the courage to dissolve the committee and hold the FA accountable for their actions.”

He emphasized the need for the GFA to submit a report, highlighting that the Minister for Youth and Sports, who represents the government, also has a responsibility in this matter.

Sarpong’s call for transparency and accountability in the selection of a new coach reflects the growing concerns surrounding the management of Ghanaian football in the aftermath of the AFCON disappointment.
