Former Premier League manager, Chris Hughton, has twice experienced racial abuse while attending the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
The incidents occurred as Hughton was on his way to watch two separate matches. The first occurred as he was walking to the stadium to watch the match between Algeria and Senegal.
The second incident happened as he was heading to the match between Ghana and Mali. Both times, Hughton was subjected to racial slurs and insults by unidentified individuals.
Referring to the incidents, Hughton stated, “It’s disappointing and upsetting to be targeted in this way. As someone who has dedicated their career to football, it’s disheartening to experience such ignorance and hate.”
The 2023 AFCON has been marred by several incidents of racial abuse, prompting calls for stricter measures to be implemented to address the issue. Football authorities and governing bodies have been urged to take decisive action to stamp out racism in the sport.
