Former Black Stars defender, John Paintsil, has called on Ghana Premier League clubs to elevate the standards of the domestic league.

During an appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz, Paintsil expressed his satisfaction with the support provided to clubs by the Ghana Football Association.

Despite this support, he urged clubs to take more initiative in order to enhance the assistance they receive from the football association.

Paintsil pointed out, “Every year, before the league starts, the GFA provides footballs and money for the clubs but in my time, this wasn’t the case so the clubs must help themselves,” while discussing the state of Ghana football.

He emphasized the need for clubs to utilize the resources they receive efficiently and to seek additional finances to support their teams, stating, “The little you get, use it judiciously. Wherever you can get money to finance the team, you should do it. If the local (based) players are happy, you will see that the players will stay here (in Ghana).”

Paintsil, who represented Ghana at the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups, also had stints in the English Premier League with Fulham and West Ham United.
