President of the Ghana FA Kurt Okraku is taking steps to address the issue of players leaving the local football scene in large numbers.
The mass exodus of players has had a negative impact on the quality of the Ghana Premier League and other leagues in the country.
Many of the players who excel in the local leagues end up moving to other clubs in Africa or even to Europe in search of better opportunities.
During a ‘Meet the Press’ event in Kumasi last Wednesday, Kurt Okraku revealed that the Ghana FA has developed strategies to support and incentivize players, in order to discourage them from leaving the local scene.
“The policies we have rolled out are based on our belief that with the right amount of investment, our leagues will grow. When our leagues grow, our players will be content and more likely to stay longer,” Okraku stated.
He also added, “In our efforts to achieve this, we have proposed strategic interventions to the government that will ensure that our players receive better financial incentives to stay, and are also recognized by national team selectors to build stronger national teams. I am confident that the government will support our efforts.”
