Former Real Madrid and Barcelona star Robert Prosinecki applies for Black Stars coaching job

Former Real Madrid and Barcelona star Robert Prosinecki has thrown his hat in the ring for the vacant Black Stars coaching job.

The four-time Africa champions are currently without a head coach following the dismissal of Chris Hughton after the Black Stars’ disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Hughton and the entire technical team of the Black Stars were relieved of their duties after the team’s dismal showing at the continental tournament.

However, Prosinecki’s agent, Vukoja Josip, has confirmed that his client has officially submitted his application to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as he vies for the position.

This is not the first time the Croatian coach has expressed his interest in leading the Black Stars. He previously applied for the role in 2012 following the sacking of Goran Stevanovic, but was not successful in his bid for the job.

In recent years, Prosinecki has held managerial positions at various clubs, including Red Stars Belgrade, Kayserispor, Denizlispor, and Olimpija Ljubljana, as well as the Azerbaijan national team and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most recently, he briefly managed Rudeš, a club based in Zagreb, before stepping down from his position.

Ghana’s early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations came after failing to secure a victory in any of their group stage matches. The West African football powerhouse managed to secure two draws but suffered a defeat, ultimately finishing in third place in Group B, behind Cape Verde and Egypt.
