Former Croatian footballer and coach, Robert Prosinecki, has officially thrown his hat into the ring for the role of head coach for the Ghana national team.

His agent, Vukoja Josip, confirmed that Prosinecki submitted his application to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) ahead of the February 2, 2024 deadline. Josip also mentioned that Prosinecki will soon be meeting with the GFA to discuss his application further.

This isn’t the first time Prosinecki has shown interest in coaching the Black Stars. He previously applied for the role in 2012 after Goran Stevanovic was dismissed, however, he wasn’t successful in his bid.

With an impressive background in football, having played for prestigious clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid, Prosinecki brings a wealth of experience to the table. He also served as an assistant coach for the Croatia national team from 2006 to 2010.

His managerial experience includes stints with Red Stars Belgrade, Kayserispor, Denizlispor, and Olimpija Ljubljana, as well as managing the Azerbaijani national team and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most recently, he briefly led Rudeš, a club based in Zagreb, before parting ways with the position.

The Ghana FA is currently in the market for a new coach after parting ways with Irish-Ghanaian Chris Hughton due to the team’s underwhelming performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Prosinecki is among a list of names that have been linked to the coaching job, including former Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath and Jürgen Kohler.

As the GFA considers its options, the prospect of having someone of Prosinecki’s caliber at the helm is certainly an intriguing one for Ghanaian football fans.
