Black Stars kept getting worse match after match under Chris Hughton – Former Hearts of Oak CEO

Former Hearts of Oak Chief Executive Officer, Neil Armstrong Mortagbe, has expressed his disappointment with the performance of the Black Stars under the guidance of Chris Hughton.

Following Ghana’s poor showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they failed to secure a single victory, Hughton was relieved of his duties as head coach.

Mortagbe believes that Hughton inherited a promising team from Otto Addo after the 2022 World Cup and should have built upon that success.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, he stated, “Chris Hughton inherited a squad that had shown a lot of promise in Qatar during the World Cup. I had expected the team to, under him, improve even more. Rather, we saw the team floundering from match to match.”

Ghana’s disappointing performance saw them finish third in a group consisting of Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, resulting in their failure to advance to the Round of 16.

The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde and managed back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, leading to their early elimination from the tournament.

With this early exit, Ghana has now gone 42 years without claiming its fifth AFCON title, as they have exited at the group stages in two successive tournaments without registering a win.
