Member of Parliament for South Dayi constituency, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has made a bold claim regarding former Black Stars forward, Asamoah Gyan’s penalty miss at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. According to Dafeamekpor, Gyan intentionally missed the crucial penalty during the quarterfinal game against Uruguay.
The missed penalty, which could have secured Ghana a spot in the semi-finals of the World Cup, occurred in the dying minutes of extra time. Dafeamekpor alleges that Gyan’s actions were politically motivated, suggesting that the former Black Stars captain did not want the glory to go to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
In an interview with Radio XYZ, Dafeamekpor stated, “I am of the opinion that Asamoah Gyan intentionally threw away that penalty because it was under NDC. It’s today that I’ve come to the realization that he threw away the penalty in the 2010 World Cup and the Africa Cup because the glory would have come to the NDC.”
Furthermore, Dafeamekpor criticized Gyan’s decision to join the manifesto committee for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 elections candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He expressed disappointment in Gyan’s shift towards partisanship, emphasizing that as a national figure, Gyan should refrain from aligning himself with a specific political party.
These comments come in the wake of Gyan’s involvement with the NPP and his acceptance of a position within their campaign team. Dafeamekpor’s assertions have sparked a debate surrounding Gyan’s loyalty and the potential influence of politics in his sporting decisions.
