Ghana’s captain Andre Ayew has issued a long-awaited apology for the team’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, stating that what does not kill a person only makes them stronger as an individual and as a team.
Ayew took to Instagram to express his remorse, saying, “As the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what happened on the pitch for the playing body.”
He continued, “In football, these are things that happen. These are things that make you stronger. What doesn’t kill makes you stronger individually and collectively.”
Ghana’s elimination from the tournament came after they finished third in a group consisting of Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The Black Stars lost 2-1 to Cape Verde before drawing 2-2 against both Egypt and Mozambique.
This left them unable to proceed to the Round of 16, marking the second successive tournament in which the Black Stars exited at the group stages without registering a win. This extends the country’s wait for its fifth AFCON title to 42 years.
