Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has expressed his disappointment in the performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Following Ghana’s early exit from the tournament, Suhuyini questioned the worth of investing in the national team.
Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif revealed to Parliament that over 8.5 million dollars were budgeted for the tournament, but only just over 3 million dollars were spent on three matches.
In response to the expenditure, Suhuyini criticized the investment made in the Black Stars, stating, “Did we have to spend over US$3 million for people to build contacts? Is this what is worth over 3 million that has been spent?”
He emphasized that the huge investments made in the Black Stars were in the wrong areas.
Ghana’s disappointing performance saw them finish third in a group consisting of Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, failing to advance to the Round of 16.
The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde and managed back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, ultimately leading to their elimination from the tournament.
This marks the second successive tournament in which the Black Stars exited at the group stage without securing a win, prolonging the country’s wait for its fifth AFCON title to 42 years.
