Accra Hearts of Oak, one of Ghana’s top football clubs, recently announced the appointment of Ivorian coach Aboubakar Ouattara as their new head coach.
The decision was made by the club’s board, with Alhaji Akambi, a prominent member, expressing the club’s desire to reclaim its position at the top of African football and compete in the prestigious CAF Champions League.
During an interview with Richard Ntow Gyan on Fox FM in Kumasi, Akambi explained the reasoning behind Ouattara’s selection. He stressed the importance of finding a coach whose vision aligns with the club’s goal of achieving success on the continental stage.
“There are a lot of things a team will look at before appointing a coach. Ghanaian coaches are equally good coaches, but they’re a lot of philosophies and other things we considered,” he said.
Akambi added, “Looking at our idea of taking Hearts of Oak to the days where we conquered Africa, we needed a coach who had that experience. If you look at Ouattara, he has coached a lot of clubs in Africa and has won the Champions League. When we played against WAC, he was with them. So he has the things we needed.”
