The world has lost an iconic figure as the news of the passing of William Post, the inventor of Pop-Tarts was broken.

Post, who died at the age of 96, has credited with coming up with the iconic snack which has delighted millions of Americans since hitting US shelves in 1964.

In interviews, Post often credited Pop-Tarts success to being a team effort. Post has been working as a manager for Hekman Biscuit Company – later renamed Keebler Company – when Kellogg’s approached the firm to create a toastable breakfast food. He came up with a rough idea for Pop-Tarts, but many were hesitant to get on board.

Post said that there were many naysayers and that some of his good friends would tell him it’s not a good idea. But despite the initial skepticism, Pop-Tarts took off and Post’s doubters were quickly proven wrong.

Now 60 years on, Pop-Tarts can be found in almost every US supermarket and come in a range of flavors. They maintain annual sales of around $1 billion in the US alone. Post previously talked about how it took months to work out how to create the perfect Pop-Tarts – which were initially called fruit scones.

In addition to creating a delicious snack, Post has left behind an incredible legacy through his family. He spent an incredible 72 years married to his high school sweetheart Florence before she passed away in 2020. He leaves behind his children as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren who visited him so often.
