Valentine’s Day: Kumasi souvenir vendors lament low patronage

Valentine’s Day is a special day for people in Ghana to show love and appreciation for their loved ones.

Traditionally, the day is marked by the exchange of chocolates, flowers, and other gifts. However, residents of Kumasi have expressed different views on the significance of Valentine’s Day.

Some individuals believe that expressing love and giving gifts should not be limited to just one day.

A resident mentioned, “I am not really concerned about Valentine’s Day; if you love someone, you should give them presents, not only on Valentine’s Day.” Another person expressed, “We have actually overrated it. Look at the street right now; nobody cares what is going on.”

This sentiment was reflected in the decrease in sales for vendors of Valentine products in Kumasi. The low patronage was attributed to the waning interest in the celebration of the day.

One vendor, Regina, expressed disappointment at the slow sales, stating, “The market has been slow; yesterday [Tuesday], they bought quite a number, but this morning has not been encouraging at all.”

Overall, it is evident that while Valentine’s Day holds significance for many, there is also a growing sentiment that love and appreciation should be expressed every day, not just on a designated holiday.
