Former United Nations Senior Governance Advisor, Professor Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has expressed the need for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be given a chance to prove himself as President of Ghana.
During a recent political discussion on an Accra-based television programme, Professor Agyeman-Duah highlighted the importance of allowing Dr. Bawumia to chart a new path, separate from his previous statements while in opposition or as chairman of the Economic Management Team.
Additionally, he emphasized the necessity for candidates to project a new vision to fundamentally change Ghana’s economy, moving it away from a dependent economy to an independent or interdependent one. He also raised concerns about the attitudes of politicians and their tendency to spew falsehoods while in opposition, only to struggle to meet the expectations of Ghanaians when in power.
During the television programme, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), challenged Professor Agyeman-Duah’s generalizations about politicians and urged him to be fair in his remarks. He specifically addressed the need to hold politicians accountable for dishonesty rather than lumping them all together.
Furthermore, Aide to Vice President Dr. Bawumia, Mr. Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, underscored the New Patriotic Party’s superior economic management record compared to the NDC, despite the difficulties encountered between 2021 and 2022.
Overall, the discussion highlighted the complexities of political leadership in Ghana and the need for transparency, accountability, and the ability to deliver on promises. It also emphasized the importance of allowing political leaders the opportunity to prove themselves while holding them to high standards of integrity and performance.
