Akufo-Addo to meet majority caucus over suspected leadership tensions

Reports suggest that President Akufo-Addo has arranged for a meeting with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament to address the growing tension within the caucus. The cause of the tension is the proposed reshuffle of the front bench in Parliament, which has led to division among the caucus members.

It is reported that one faction is advocating for a change in leadership, while another, led by first deputy speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu, insists on maintaining the current leadership. The argument for the change stems from the impending departure of majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu in 2024. This has led to a push for Alexander Afenyo-Markin, his deputy, to take over and ensure a smooth transition in the next government.

Party stalwart, Peter Mac Manu, confirmed in an interview that discussions on the proposed leadership change were omitted from the National Executive Council agenda, further adding to the internal tension within the NPP MPs.

In response, Joseph Osei-Owusu and other MPs have made it clear that they will not entertain any change in leadership and are satisfied with the current leadership led by Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

The internal conflict within the NPP Members of Parliament highlights the challenging dynamics within the party’s leadership. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how President Akufo-Addo’s intervention will address and resolve the growing tension among the caucus.
