Renowned Ghanaian actor, Omar Sherrif Captan, has joined the chorus of voices advocating for a revitalization of the theatre scene in Ghana.

Expressing his thoughts on the current state of theatre in the country, he highlighted the need for more attention to be paid to the quality of sets used in productions.

Despite noting a recent increase in interest in theatre in Ghana, Captan emphasized the importance of ensuring that productions have well-crafted sets. He stressed the need for good costumes, real props, and a stage that allows for the use of realistic elements such as cars, bikes, animals, and more to enhance the overall authenticity of performances.

Captan’s remarks were made during the press launch of a new play titled ‘The Licence,’ written by acclaimed playwright Latif Abubakar. The play, originally penned by Italian writer Luigi Pirandello, delves into themes of bureaucracy, absurdity, and the individual’s resistance against oppressive systems.

Excited about his role in Abubakar’s new production, Captan expressed enthusiasm for the challenge of portraying a character in the Afrocentric adaptation of the play. The play is set to premiere at the Accra International Conference Center on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of May, 2024.

Captan, along with the team at Globe Productions Limited, is working on bringing a fresh and unique perspective to the play, offering audiences a new take on classic themes through an Afrocentric lens. With the aim of captivating and engaging audiences, the production promises to deliver a thought-provoking and immersive theatrical experience.
