The world lost a true visionary on December 15, 1966, when Walt Disney passed away in Los Angeles, California.

The animation mogul, born on December 5, 1901, left behind a legacy that continues to enchant audiences of all ages to this day. Walt Disney was a pioneer in the world of animated films, creating iconic characters such as Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.

Walt Disney’s journey in the entertainment industry began at a young age when he started selling his sketches at just seven years old. His career took off in 1920 when he landed a job as an advertising cartoonist, a role that would eventually pave the way for his own animated cartoons. In 1928, Disney created Steamboat Willie, a groundbreaking animated film that introduced the world to Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.

In 1937, Walt Disney Animation Studios was born, leading to the creation of his first fully animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disneyland Park opened its doors in Anaheim, California, on July 17, 1955, marking the beginning of a new era in family entertainment. Even after his passing, Walt Disney’s legacy lived on with the launch of Walt Disney World in 1971, followed by Epcot in 1982. Today, there are 12 Disney theme parks around the world, bringing joy and magic to visitors from across the globe.

Walt Disney’s cause of death was a circulatory collapse brought on by lung cancer. Diagnosed in November 1966, Walt underwent cobalt therapy and surgery to remove a portion of his left lung. However, despite his courageous battle, he succumbed to the disease on December 15 of the same year.

Walt Disney was survived by his wife, Lillian, their daughter Diane, and adopted daughter Sharon. Lillian remarried after Walt’s passing and passed away in 1997. Diane, who followed in her father’s footsteps as a philanthropist, passed away in 2013. Sharon, their adopted daughter, also left a mark in the entertainment industry as an actress before her passing in 1993.
