February 14th, the day of love, commonly known as Valentine’s Day, is celebrated by many people around the world. This holiday is marked by the exchange of gifts, cards, and flowers between loved ones. But have you ever wondered about the history and origins of Valentine’s Day traditions and symbols of love?

Valentine’s Day began as a minor feast day honoring two Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine. In AD 496, Pope Gelasius I declared February 14 as the Feast of Saint Valentine of Rome. The future St. Valentine, a Roman citizen named Valentinus, was jailed and later sentenced to death for his Christian beliefs and refusal to obey Roman Emperor Claudius.

Legend has it that while imprisoned, Valentinus brought his jailer’s blind daughter, Julia, to his cell for lessons. Over time, Julia began to pray for and ultimately received her sight, leading her to form a deep bond with Valentinus. After his execution, Julia planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave, linking the almond tree and its light pink flowers with abiding love and friendship.

The colors red and white have also become symbolic of Valentine’s Day as they represent passion, purity, holiness, and virtue. Additionally, the holiday’s origins may date back even farther to the ancient pagan feast of Lupercalia, which involved animal sacrifice and fertility rituals.

In the early 1700s, King Charles II of Sweden popularized roses as symbols of love, introducing the language of flowers to Europe. Roses, especially red ones, became associated with expressions of love. Even the colors of roses convey nuanced meanings, with white roses symbolizing purity and innocence, and yellow roses representing joy and friendship.

Cupid, the Roman god of desire, is another prominent symbol of Valentine’s Day. Cupid is known for shooting magical gold-tipped arrows at individuals, causing them to fall deeply in love.
