UK authorities order Jamaican government to cover Vybz Kartel’s legal fees after successful murder conviction appeal

Renowned dancehall star Vybz Kartel, also known as Adidja Azim Palmer, has recently emerged victorious in a significant legal battle as the United Kingdom authorities have instructed the Jamaican government to cover his legal fees.

Kartel, famously known as the “Worl’ Boss,” had been serving a life sentence following his 2014 conviction for the murder of his former associate, Clive “Lizard” Williams.

The turning point in Kartel’s case came in 2021 when his lawyer filed an appeal at the Privy Council in the United Kingdom, presenting new evidence that shed doubt on his conviction.

This appeal has resulted in a recent order, dated April 10, 2024, signed by a clerk of the Privy Council. The order directs the Jamaican government to not only cover Kartel’s legal expenses but also those of three other defendants who were convicted in the same murder case.

The order stipulates that the appeal is allowed, the convictions are to be annulled due to juror misconduct, and the case is to be sent back to the Court of Appeal for a decision on a potential retrial. Additionally, the Jamaican government is required to cover the costs of the appellants.

The next crucial step in this legal saga is a Court of Appeal session scheduled for June 10, where the fate of Kartel and his co-defendants will be determined – whether they will face a retrial or be set free.

This latest development marks a significant milestone in Vybz Kartel’s ongoing legal battle, and all eyes will be on the upcoming Court of Appeal session for further clarity on his future.
