Nigerian actor and comedian, John Okafor, known by his stage name Mr Ibu, has passed away at the age of 62, leaving the entertainment industry and fans in mourning.

The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, confirmed the news on Saturday, announcing that Mr Ibu had succumbed to a cardiac arrest. Okafor gained fame with his iconic role in the film “Mr Ibu” two decades ago, which earned him the nickname that stayed with him throughout his career.

His talent and humor shone in over 200 Nollywood films, including popular titles like Keziah, 9 Wives, and multiple sequels of Mr Ibu. Tributes poured in from his colleagues and fans, with actress Mercy Johnson-Okojie bidding him farewell and former UN rapporteur Joy Ezeilo acknowledging his ability to bring laughter to many.

Nigeria’s Culture Minister Hannatu Musawa described him as a household name who had brought joy to families over the years. Reports indicate that Okafor passed away at a hospital in Lagos state.

The late actor faced health challenges last year, leading to the amputation of one of his legs in November, with financial support from his fans. Unfortunately, his son Daniel Okafor and adopted daughter Jasmine Chioma are currently facing legal issues for allegedly misappropriating funds amounting to $60,700 from him.

In the midst of these struggles, Mr Ibu continued to entertain his fans, but his last years were tumultuous, with the actor voicing concerns about attempts on his life through poisoning. Despite the challenges he faced, he is survived by his 13 children, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and entertainment in the hearts of many.
