Tems, Victoria Monét, Chris Brown and ‘The Color Purple’ nab early wins at NAACP Image Award virtual ceremony

The 55th annual NAACP Image Awards kicked off with Victoria Monét and Chris Brown taking home the early wins. The virtual three-day event, hosted by Khloe Thomas, saw Monét leading the nominations with six nods, followed by Usher with five, including entertainer of the year.

Monét, known for her hit “Jaguar II,” secured victories for Outstanding New Artist and Outstanding Album, adding to her impressive collection of three Grammys. Usher clinched the title for Outstanding Male Artist, while H.E.R. took home the honor for Outstanding Female Artist.

Chris Brown celebrated wins for his collaborations with Ciara (“How We Roll”) and Davido & Lojay (“Sensational”). “The Color Purple,” which received 16 nominations, won for Outstanding Soundtrack or Compilation Album. The musical film, based on Alice Walker’s novel, features performances from a star-studded cast including Fantasia, Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, and more.

The Image Awards ceremony will air live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Saturday. Queen Latifah is set to return as host, and special honorees include Amanda Gorman, New Edition, Frankie Beverly, and June Ambrose. The event will also feature a fashion show and a full list of winners from Night 1, including awards for Outstanding International Song, Gospel Album, and Literary Works in various categories.
