Nigerian singer Simi talks charting her path to stardom and why she still engineers her own music

It appears that Nigerian music sensation Simi is a jack of all trades. From being a singer, songwriter, to one of the few women who produce their own music, Simi is paving the way for the future of Afropop and soul music.

The talented artist has recently had the opportunity to open for the legendary Alicia Keys on her 2023 tour, which has propelled Simi into the international spotlight. With hits on the Billboard World Album Charts, Simi, whose real name is Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, is making waves in the music industry.

Despite starting her career as a gospel singer with the release of her first album “Ogaju” in 2008, Simi found herself without a record label when she wanted to produce her “RESTLESS” EP in 2014. Determined to make her mark, she taught herself how to record, mix, and master her own music by watching tutorials on YouTube.

“It came to me so naturally,” Simi said. “I love doing it.”

Growing up in Ojuelegba, Lagos, Simi discovered her passion for singing at a young age. Her debut gospel album in 2008 laid the foundation for her successful career. Transitioning into mainstream music with hits like “Tiff” and her second studio album “Simisola,” which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard World Album Chart, solidified her position in the industry.

With over one billion streams across various platforms, Simi’s unique style and soulful voice have captured the hearts of many. Despite her rising fame, she remains committed to writing, producing, and engineering her own music. In 2019, she launched her record label, Studio Brat, inspired by her countless hours spent in the studio perfecting her craft.

Simi’s latest collaboration with Tiwa Savage on “Men Are Crazy” showcases her versatility and musical prowess. Balancing her professional success with her personal life as a wife and mother to Nigerian Afrobeat artist Adekunle Gold, Simi finds joy in both worlds.

“I’m also protective of (my daughter) and my relationship with my husband. you know, we’re goofy and stuff on the internet, but the core of our relationship is ours,” Simi shared.

Simi’s journey from a church choir to the global stage is a testament to her passion, creativity, and unwavering dedication to her craft. With her talent and determination, Simi continues to make a mark in the music industry and inspire aspiring artists around the world.
