How a surveillance tape held Diddy accountable

Sean “Diddy” Combs has issued a public apology almost 48 hours after a surveillance video surfaced showing him physically assaulting his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in 2016.

The exclusive video obtained by CNN shows Combs grabbing, shoving, dragging, and kicking Ventura during an altercation that aligns with the allegations in a federal lawsuit filed by Ventura in November of the same year.

Representatives for Combs, a prominent figure in the music industry who founded the music label Bad Boy in 1993, did not initially respond to requests for comment. The rapper, producer, and business mogul remained silent for nearly two days as backlash mounted and a media storm ensued.

In a video posted on Instagram, Combs expressed remorse for his behavior, stating, “It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that. I was f**ked up — I hit rock bottom — but I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable.” He took full responsibility for his actions and emphasized his commitment to self-improvement.

Ventura’s attorney, Meredith Firetog, criticized Combs’ apology, stating that it was more about himself than the individuals he hurt. The attorney highlighted the fact that Combs denied the allegations initially, only issuing an apology once the video evidence surfaced.

In Ventura’s November lawsuit, she accused Combs of rape and abuse, detailing incidents of physical violence and coercion. The complaint described an altercation at the InterContinental Hotel in 2016, where Combs allegedly punched Ventura in the face and threw glass vases at her.

Despite vehemently denying the allegations in Ventura’s lawsuit and five other civil suits, Combs settled the case while maintaining his innocence. The settlement details were not disclosed, and Combs’ attorney emphasized that settling did not imply wrongdoing.

The release of the surveillance video sparked outrage and support for Ventura on social media. Aubrey O’Day, a former member of Danity Kane, another Bad Boy label signee, criticized Combs and showed solidarity with Ventura. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office acknowledged the video but indicated that criminal charges could not be pursued due to the time frame.

With the public scrutiny intensifying, Combs’ personal trainer and Ventura’s husband, Alex Fine, penned a letter denouncing violence against women and calling out abusers. The couple, who have been married since 2019, have two daughters.
