In January 2012, the renowned Nigerian movie producer and director, Dickson Iroegbu, made headlines with the release of his controversial film “Law58.”

This movie delved into the topic of homosexuality in Nigeria, shedding light on the impact it has on traditional African society.

The film featured popular actor Kanayo O. Kanayo, also known as Anayo Modestus Onyekwere MFR, in a leading role.

Interestingly, reports reveal that Dickson initially approached actors Desmond Elliot and Mike Ezuruonye for roles in the film, but they turned down the offer.

Instead, Kanayo O. Kanayo and Mcmaurice Ndubueze portrayed gay lovers in the movie. The plot revolves around Kanayo’s character discovering his partner in bed with another man, leading to a dramatic confrontation.

It is worth noting that the release of “Law58” coincided with the passing of a bill in Nigeria that criminalized same-sex marriage, imposing a 14-year jail sentence on individuals involved in such acts.

The movie sparked discussions on the perception of homosexuality as un-African and taboo, with many considering it a foreign influence that has infiltrated African culture.

Despite the controversy surrounding the film, “Law58” managed to captivate audiences and provoke important conversations about LGBTQ+ rights in Nigeria.
