Alec Baldwin’s legal team has filed a motion asking a judge to dismiss the involuntary manslaughter charges against him related to a fatal shooting on a movie set in 2021. The motion accuses prosecutors of unfair treatment towards the Emmy award-winning actor.
Special prosecutor Kari Morrissey has been given 14 days to respond in court to the motion. Baldwin has consistently denied any responsibility for the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The incident occurred while the 65-year-old actor was practicing firing a Colt .45 pistol before filming a scene for the movie “Rust” near Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Although Baldwin maintains that he did not pull the trigger and only drew back the hammer of the gun, new tests led to the reinstatement of charges in January. The recent motion from his legal team alleges prosecutorial misconduct and claims that exculpatory evidence was withheld from the grand jury.
This development comes shortly after the film’s armor, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Baldwin’s trial is scheduled to begin on July 10th in New Mexico. The actor’s attorneys argue that the case against him has been an abuse of the legal system and a violation of his rights.
