The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, has revealed a comprehensive plan to enhance sports development in Ghana if he is elected as President.
During his address, Bawumia laid out his vision to establish an agency dedicated to promoting sports throughout the country.
This initiative aims to bring together various stakeholders to revitalize Ghana’s sporting sector, which has faced challenges in recent years, especially in football and track and field events.
“As part of a broad sports development vision, my government will create the Ghana School Sports Secretariat, an agency under the sports ministry, in collaboration with the GES and sports federations,” he announced.
Bawumia also stressed his commitment to forming partnerships with international sports organizations to nurture the talents of Ghanaian youth.
“We will pursue strategic alliances with well-known sports bodies such as the NBA and NFL to position Ghana as a center for emerging sports in Africa, providing numerous opportunities for our young people,” he affirmed.
Highlighting past achievements, Bawumia mentioned his collaboration with the NFL, which led to Ghana hosting the first NFL Flag Football event in Africa in 2022.
“My government will also seek school-level collaboration with international sports bodies like the NBA and NFL to make Ghana a hub for these emerging sports in Africa, creating more opportunities for young people,” he continued.
“We have already done this with the NFL, the governing body for American Football, which agreed to host the first ever NFL Flag Football in Africa in Ghana in 2022 after my engagement with them.
“This paved the way for 10 young Ghanaians to be selected to represent Africa in a global NFL tournament last year. Another group of young Ghanaians, who were selected after the 2nd NFL Africa Football event held in Ghana last year, are currently in the United States to represent Africa.”
