The Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Peter Twumasi, has defended the decision to suspend football activities at state-owned stadiums for non-sporting events. This comes after criticism was directed at him in December for allowing the Accra Sports Stadium to be rented out to musicians for concerts.
Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee, Prof. Peter Twumasi explained that the authority makes a profit from renting out the venue for non-sporting events, and some of the money is used to restore any damages done to the pitch.
He stated, “The revenue from these events, which includes a pitch insurance cover, is able to fully restore the damages caused to the pitch. We had informed all stakeholders beforehand that the stadium would be used for non-sporting events in December, and the revenue generated should cover the restoration costs.”
Prof. Peter Twumasi emphasized that activities such as musical concerts at state-owned stadiums are not uncommon and that the authority has been able to fully recover the pitch following such events.
