After an impressive performance at the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, Abdou’s name has been added to the Ghana Football Association’s list of potential candidates to succeed Chris Hughton as the head coach of the Ghanaian national team.
Renowned Mauritania football expert, Lassana Camara, reports that Abdou’s leadership with Mauritania has garnered interest from nations beyond Ghana.
Abdou’s coaching prowess was showcased when Mauritania secured its first victory at the AFCON and advanced to the round of 16 for the first time, drawing attention from nations like Burkina Faso, Algeria, and Cote D’Ivoire.
Abdou has also previously guided Comoros to the round of 16 at the 2021 AFCON, achieving a historic milestone for the island nation, including a memorable victory over Ghana in the group stage.
Following Ghana’s underwhelming performance in the 2023 AFCON, where they failed to secure a win against Cape Verde, Mozambique, and Egypt, Chris Hughton was relieved of his duties.
A five-man committee has been established to appoint a new head coach for the Black Stars within the next 21 days, with Amir Abdou emerging as a compelling option for consideration.
