Former Cameroon defender Alexandre Song has spoken out about the team’s disappointing journey in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, questioning the limitations faced by the national team’s coaching staff.

Once seen as strong contenders for the AFCON title, the Indomitable Lions were eliminated, prompting Song to raise concerns about the freedom granted to the coaching staff.

During a recent appearance on a sports program in Cameroon, the former player didn’t hold back, expressing pointed concerns about the operational dynamics within the team.

The elimination has caused a stir in the Cameroonian football community, leading to frustration for many former players. While some have directed their disappointment at Coach Rigobert Song, others have criticized Fecafoot.

Alexandre Song’s latest comments have added to the scrutiny surrounding the autonomy of the technical team.

“Do the technical staff have the freedom to operate? Are the players given the necessary freedom? If mentally you are not free, the body does not follow […] We left players like Choupo Moting, Martin Hongla, and Nsame who could contribute,” he said.

“I have nothing against the young players we took, but we saw that they had difficulties,” he added.
