American artist PJ Morton has embarked on a musical journey from Cape Town to Cairo with the release of his new album.
The five-time GRAMMY winner fully created this unprecedented project during a 30-day trip across Africa, drawing inspiration from the diverse cultures, stories, and communities he encountered.
Upon his arrival on the continent last fall, Morton made a conscious decision not to write any music before or after his time in Africa.
He recorded all his vocals before leaving, capturing the raw emotions and influences he experienced throughout his travels. The result is a blend of R&B, soul, gospel, pop, and jazz, infused with the essence of Africa.
Collaborating with artists like Fireboy DML, Mádé Kuti, Asa, Ndabo Zulu, and Soweto Spiritual Singers, as well as producers P.Priime and The Cavemen, Morton’s album “Cape Town to Cairo” serves as a musical bridge connecting different cultures and genres.
Tracks like “Smoke & Mirrors” and “Simunye (We Are One)” highlight native sounds and themes of unity, while songs like “Count On Me” deliver uplifting messages about friendship and solidarity.
In addition to his album release, Morton also celebrates the debut of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disney World, featuring his original soundtrack.
He is set to release his career-spanning memoir, “Saturday Night, Sunday Morning,” this fall, sharing his journey from a preacher’s kid to a renowned artist who continues to challenge conventions in music and faith.
Morton’s upcoming Cape Town to Cairo Tour will take him and his band across the globe, with stops in North America and beyond.
From headline performances to residencies and collaborations with other artists, Morton’s commitment to creating music on his own terms shines through in his upcoming projects and performances.
