John Legend speaks out for the first time about the allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs, with whom he collaborated on a song released last year.
In an interview with CNN International’s Christiane Amanpour, Legend expressed horror over the allegations and the recently released video evidence showing Combs physically assaulting his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in a 2016 incident.
Ventura first referenced the 2016 attack in a lawsuit against Combs in November 2023, which was settled out of court one day after it was filed. Combs denied the allegations outlined in Ventura’s lawsuit, but the video evidence has shed light on the incident.
Legend emphasized his default stance of believing women when they make such accusations and expressed the importance of supporting and holding abusers accountable. He called the allegations against Combs “shameful” and expressed his desire for accountability and healing for all the victims.
Combs has been named in eight civil lawsuits, including Ventura’s now-settled complaint, all containing allegations of sexual assault. Despite admitting to the 2016 attack on Ventura in a video apology, Combs has denied the other allegations, and seven cases remain active.
In addition to discussing the allegations against Combs, Legend also talked about his new podcast series “Afghan Star,” which tells the inspiring story behind the competition reality show that searched for talented singers across Afghanistan. Legend credited the series as “quite revolutionary” for the country, highlighting the power of music and resilience in the face of adversity.
Despite the Taliban’s recent regain of control in Afghanistan, Legend noted that music remains alive in the country, showcasing the enduring spirit and connection fostered by shows like “Afghan Star.”
He emphasized the importance of music in uplifting communities and fostering resilience in challenging times.
