Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has stepped up to take accountability for the disappointing performance of the team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The apology was shared in a video that he uploaded on his Instagram account, eight days following a lacklustre showing that ended in a draw, allowing Mozambique to score two goals in added time and subsequently eliminate Ghana from the tournament.
“As the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what transpired on the field for the players,” he stated.
“In football, these are occurrences that occur. These are the things that make you stronger. What doesn’t defeat you builds you up individually and as a team.”
Ghana missed out on advancing to the Round of 16 after finishing third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.
The Black Stars were defeated 2-1 by Cape Verde, followed by back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, confirming Ghana’s exit from the tournament.
For the second consecutive tournament, the Black Stars exited at the group stages without securing a victory, extending the country’s quest for its fifth AFCON title to 42 years.
