Hulu’s newest miniseries, “Under the Bridge,” delves into the tragic true story of 14-year-old Reena Virk’s murder in Canada.

The series explores the investigation into her disappearance and the subsequent trials of her teenage killers, Kelly Ellard and Warren Glowatski, shedding light on one of the country’s most shocking crimes.

Reena Virk, a Canadian teen born to Indian immigrant parents, faced relentless bullying from her peers due to her appearance, religion, and ethnicity. Despite her struggles to fit in, Virk was tragically attacked and murdered on November 14, 1997, by a group of teenage girls known as “The Shoreline Six” and Warren Glowatski.

After the brutal assault near the Craigflower Bridge, Virk’s body was found washed ashore, revealing the extent of the violence inflicted upon her. The subsequent investigation led to convictions for the attackers, with Glowatski receiving a life sentence for second-degree murder and Ellard facing multiple trials before being sentenced to life in prison without parole for at least seven years.

Despite legal proceedings, Ellard, now known as Kerry Marie Sim, was granted day parole in 2017 and has continued to be monitored by the Parole Board of Canada while serving her sentence. The granting of day parole allows offenders the opportunity to reintegrate into the community while under supervision, giving them a chance to participate in activities outside of prison.

“Under the Bridge” brings to light the tragic murder of Reena Virk and the ongoing impact it has had on her family and the Canadian justice system. Through gripping storytelling, the miniseries explores the complexities of the case and questions whether justice was truly served for the young victim and her family.
