‘Ethel Merman’s Broadway’ star Rita McKenzie dies aged 76 after long-standing illness

Actress and singer Rita McKenzie, renowned for her vibrant performances as Ethel Merman, has passed away at the age of 76, her husband Scott Stander has confirmed.

The star of the one-woman show “Ethel Merman’s Broadway” eventually succumbed to a long-standing illness in Los Angeles this past Saturday.

In 1988, McKenzie helmed the leading role as the eminent Merman, who had previously graced audiences with iconic Broadway numbers such as “Anything Goes,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Gypsy,” and “Hello, Dolly!” McKenzie took her powerful voice to stages across the United States, Europe, and Asia, earning recognition for her portrayal of the esteemed Broadway legend.

Furthermore, she celebrated success in numerous roles Merman had made famous such as Reno Sweeney in “Anything Goes,” the gunslinger in a 50th-anniversary tour of “Annie Get Your Gun,” and Rose in “Gypsy.”

McKenzie’s talent also led her to star as Lita Encore in the Los Angeles premiere of “Ruthless! The Musical” and to partake in a U.S. tour of Neil Simon’s “The Female Odd Couple” opposite her friend Barbara Eden.

In addition to her stage presence, McKenzie appeared in various productions, including “Unauthorized: Brady Brunch – The Final Days” of 2000 and Rodney Dangerfield’s “Meet Wally Sparks.” Beyond the realm of theater and film, McKenzie also charmed orchestral audiences, gracing iconic events such as the PBS “Capitol Fourth” celebration on the Washington Mall in 1995.

Aside from her artistic contributions, McKenzie also served as an interview host and producer for television and stage performances. She co-produced the pre-Broadway tour of Rupert Holmes’ “All Things Equal: The Life and Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”
