Saddick Adams, the lead organizer of the #SaveGhanaFootball protest, has raised concerns regarding the $3 million that Ghana spent on just three games during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He highlighted that a large portion of AFCON expenses are covered by the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) and not entirely by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
During an appearance on Newsfile, Mr. Adams pointed out that while CAF is responsible for covering a significant number of contingent members for the Black Stars, the GFA bears the costs for additional members.
Mr. Adams expressed his concern about the lack of transparency and detailed breakdown of the $3 million spending. He emphasized the need for the public to know how the $3 million was spent, stating that mere blanket figures are insufficient without delving into the specifics.
Additionally, Mr. Adams challenged the claim that the nation saved $3 million from AFCON, especially since Ghana was eliminated during the group stages. He called for a proper interrogation of the spending and the release of detailed breakdowns to give the public a clearer understanding of the expenses incurred.
It is evident from Mr. Adams’ remarks that there is a significant need for greater transparency and accountability in disclosing the details of the $3 million expenditure during AFCON. This level of transparency will provide clarity and confidence in the management of funds for such sporting events.
