Ghana has made a significant investment of 3 million dollars to participate in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, however, the team has not achieved any victories in the group stage. In fact, the Black Stars have not progressed from the group stage in the last three major tournaments, winning only one out of nine matches.

The Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed his frustration over the government’s decision to continue investing such a large amount of money into the team despite their lack of success.

Ablakwa highlighted specific examples of the massive spending, stating “The document the Sports Ministry submitted to this house shows that we spent Ghc7.4m on qualifiers, Ghc13.2m on the Ghana v Madagascar match, and Ghc5.3m on airlifting supporters to Qatar. We are throwing hundreds of millions into supporting the Black Stars and we are still not getting results.”

Ghana’s performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations was disappointing as they missed out on a place in the Round of 16 after finishing third in a group consisting of Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique.

The team lost 2-1 to Cape Verde and had back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.
