Finance ministry released $5m for Black Stars’ Afcon campaign: Sports minister reveals $2m surplus

Ghana’s Minister of Sports, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, appeared in Parliament today to disclose that the projected budget for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament was USD 8,506,450.00.

The Ministry of Finance released USD 5,071,840.36, of which USD 3,070,067.81 was utilized, leaving an excess of USD 2,001,772.55.

Even though the team was knocked out of the tournament early, Hon. Ussif outlined how the sum of USD 3,070,067.81 was spent on various expenses such as per diems, team flight arrangements, medical expenses, equipment, logistics, and hospitality.

Ghana made an early departure from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, bowing out in the group stage with only two points to show for their efforts.

“Mr. Speaker, our estimated budget for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament was USD 8,506,450.00 to cover the team’s pre-tournament and tournament phases (group stages, 1/6 stage, quarter-final, semi-final, and final),” he stated.

“Out of the USD 8,506,450.00, USD 5,071,840.36 was released by the Ministry of Finance, of which USD 3,070,067.81 was allocated toward per diems, team flight arrangements, medical expenses, equipment, logistics, and hospitality.

“As a result, we have a surplus of USD 2,001,772.55 following our exit from the tournament,” he concluded.
