Angola and Germany have agreed to implement a scholarship program for Angolan students at the esteemed Freiberg University of Mining and Technology.
The initial negotiations took place in October 2022 between HE Diamantino Pedro Azevedo, Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas of Angola, and Prof. Dr. Klaus-Dieter Barbknecht, Rector of the University.
A delegation from the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil, and Gas (MIREMPET) recently visited the University to further these discussions. The aim is to provide significant opportunities for Angolan students to gain academic and research excellence in mining, geosciences, and other relevant sectors. The scholarship program is expected to commence in September 2024.
The collaboration with Freiberg University of Mining and Technology is crucial, as Angola’s mining sector is anticipated to experience substantial growth in the foreseeable future. With a focus on developing local content and empowering the youth, MIREMPET intends to award full scholarships to up to 15 Master’s students in various disciplines to bolster Angola’s leadership in the mining industry.
In addition to academic excellence, the University’s location in a highly industrialized area of Germany presents promising collaboration opportunities with high-tech companies. This will provide students with practical experience and the potential for significant technology transfer to the Angolan mining sector.
Global demand for minerals and rare earths is on the rise, particularly battery minerals, and the Angolan mining sector is poised to capitalize on this trend. Recent agreements between several mining companies and the Angolan Government highlight the growing interest in the country’s mining potential.
These developments underscore the significance of preparing Angolan students for influential roles in the mining sector. By investing in education and partnerships with renowned institutions like Freiberg University, the Angolan Government is strategically positioning the country for success in the global mining industry.
The scholarship program is also expected to strengthen the longstanding relationship between Germany and Angola and attract German companies to invest in Angola’s mining sector. It is a testament to the commitment of both nations to foster sustainable economic development through education and strategic partnerships.
As Angola’s mining sector continues to evolve, initiatives such as the scholarship program at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the industry, contributing to sustainable growth and global competitiveness.
