The president of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has expressed his disappointment with the Black Stars’ performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Ghanaian team exited at the group stage after failing to secure a victory in any of their group matches. They managed to draw two games and suffered a defeat, ultimately finishing in third place in Group B, behind Cape Verde and Egypt.
This marks the second consecutive AFCON where the West African powerhouse has failed to progress to the knockout stage, following their group stage exit in AFCON 2021 held in Cameroon.
Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, the FA leader revealed that the Executive Council has been disheartened by the performance of the national team at the tournament.
“Ghana was represented by our beloved Black Stars. The events during the tournament were not what we as Ghanaians would have hoped to see, and as servants of football, we have not been pleased with how our team performed,” Okraku stated.
“As the FA, we provided and ensured that the team had all the necessary resources to enable them to perform. However, the performance of the Black Stars fell below our expectations. It is evident that the team did not meet our anticipated standards. The achievement of winning the AFCON title has eluded Ghana for over 40 years, and as servants of football, our dream, our hope, our desire is to bring that title back to Ghana. Unfortunately, it did not come to fruition,”
“The period between our last game against Mozambique and today has been a time for reflection. We saw our Black Stars in Abidjan, and it was not the Black Stars that you want to see. This is not the Black Stars I want to see. I want to see our Black Stars, all our national teams, and all league clubs play good football and win games,” he continued.
