The state of Ghana’s top tier football league, the Ghana Premier League, has come under fire from the Member of Parliament for the North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Ablakwa has expressed his frustration with the current state of the league, stating that it is a “dead product” due to the lack of investment it receives.
His comments come in the wake of the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ announcement that it plans to spend 8.5 million dollars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
During a parliamentary session, Ablakwa raised concerns about the disproportionate focus on the Black Stars at the expense of other critical aspects of football in the country.
He highlighted the significant amount of money being spent on the national team, stating, “We are throwing hundreds of millions into supporting this Black Stars and we are still not getting results.”
Ablakwa also pointed out the poor state of football infrastructure in the country, noting the absence of FIFA standard pitches and the decline of youth development and the local league.
