The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has made it clear that he did not permit the closure of the Accra Sports Stadium in December 2023.
Last year, the National Sports Authority (NSA) closed the Stadium during the Christmas period to make way for musical shows, a decision made by NSA boss Prof. Peter Twumasi.
This move disrupted the Ghana Premier League and affected several clubs using the stadium for home matches.
Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif stated that he did not authorize the decision to shut Accra Sports Stadium to football clubs. He expressed concern about the impact of hosting musical concerts on the stadium’s pitch, emphasizing the potential damage it could cause.
Minister Ussif also revealed that he has held discussions with NSA boss Prof. Peter Twumasi about the closure of the Stadium, working towards finding the best way forward to prevent similar issues in the future.
