A committee of five members has presented their recommendation for the next coach of the Black Stars to the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The report was officially delivered to GFA President Kurt Okraku on February 27, 2024. The Executive Council will now carefully review the recommendations before making a final decision.
The committee, led by Mark Addo, Vice President of the Football Association, was assembled after the departure of former head coach, Chris Hughton. Hughton was relieved of his duties following the disappointing performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Ivory Coast.
Having exited the tournament with only two points, including a loss to Cape Verde and draws against Egypt and Mozambique, the search for a new coach became a top priority.
Interviewing numerous interested candidates, the committee compiled a detailed report to assist the GFA in selecting the next coach for the national team. With over 500 applicants for the position, it was a thorough process.
Although reports in the media suggest that Otto Addo is the frontrunner for the head coach role, with former Ghanaian star Michael Essien potentially serving as an assistant coach, nothing has been confirmed yet.
Once the decision on the coaching staff is finalized, the GFA will collaborate with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and other important stakeholders for their endorsement.
It is expected that the new head coach for the Black Stars will be announced by the GFA next month, just in time for the team to regroup ahead of their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali in June.
Other members of the selection committee include Banker Kojo Addae Mensah, Professor Joseph Kwame Mintah, Opoku Nti, a Ghanaian football icon, and William Kartey, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
