Over 500 applications for Black Stars coaching job overlooked by Ghana FA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has rejected applications for the vacant coaching job for the Black Stars.

The team has been without a permanent coach since the dismissal of Chris Hughton and his technical team following a disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ivory Coast emerged as champions.

The Black Stars faced an early setback at the AFCON after failing to advance to the knockout stage of the tournament. The team drew two games, finishing third in Group B behind Cape Verde and Egypt.

To find a suitable candidate for the coaching role, the GFA formed a committee led by Vice President Mark Addo. The committee is seeking a coach who is a proven winner, aligned with Ghana’s football DNA, and possesses a coaching philosophy that resonates with the national team’s ethos.

Despite receiving over 600 applications from coaches around the world, the GFA has opted to overlook them and will instead pursue a headhunting approach to appoint the next Black Stars coach. According to reports, the applications did not meet the FA’s requirements.

The GFA has entered into discussions with South Africa coach Hugo Broos, former Gambia trainer Tom Saintfiet, and Otto Addo to take over the Black Stars. Hugo Broos is currently under contract with the South Africa Football Association, while Tom Saintfiet is unattached after stepping down from his position following Gambia’s elimination from the AFCON 2023 group stage.

Otto Addo, who is reportedly a frontrunner for the Black Stars coaching role, is currently considering his options. The GFA is now focused on securing a new coach to lead the national team to future success.
