Germany-based Ghanaian trainer Otto Addo is emerging as the frontrunner for the vacant Black Stars coaching job as the search for a new coach enters the next phase.

The Black Stars are currently without a substantive coach following the dismissal of Chris Hughton and his technical team after a disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ivory Coast emerged as champions.

Ghana faced an early setback at the AFCON after failing to advance to the knockout stage of the tournament. The West African powerhouse managed to secure only two draws in the group stage, finishing third in Group B, behind Cape Verde and Egypt.

In response, the GFA has constituted a committee, led by Vice President Mark Addo, to identify and appoint a suitable candidate for the coaching role. The committee is seeking a coach who is a proven winner, aligned with Ghana’s football DNA, and possesses a coaching philosophy that aligns with the national team’s ethos.

According to reports from Kumasi-based Nhyira FM, Otto Addo is leading the race to become the next Black Stars coach after scoring the highest marks in the job interview among other coaches.

Addo previously served as the coach of the Black Stars in 2022 and successfully guided Ghana to qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a victory over Nigeria in the final playoff round. He continued to lead the team in the World Cup, where Ghana exited the tournament at the group stage following two defeats and one win.

Following his departure, the Ghana FA appointed Chris Hughton to lead the Black Stars, but the team failed to meet expectations under his leadership.

Otto Addo’s previous experience with the national team and his coaching credentials position him as a strong candidate for the vacant coaching position as the Black Stars look to rebuild and strengthen their performance on the international stage.
