Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu’s AS Monaco team suffered elimination from the French Cup on Thursday, following a 6-5 penalty shootout defeat against lower league side Rouen. The match took place at the Stade Robert Diochon in Le Petit-Quevilly.
Despite the loss, 24-year-old Salisu stood out as a performer in the game, completing more passes than any other player on the pitch. The game saw referee Ruddy Buquet award a penalty 33 minutes in, after Rouen’s Leonard Aggoune clattered onto an opponent’s legs instead of the ball.
Folarin Balogun successfully converted the penalty, putting AS Monaco in the lead. However, the home side equalised through Valentin Sanson, who provided a pass to Clement Bassin, allowing him to score a low shot in the fifth minute of added time in the first half.
The match concluded with a 1-1 draw after extra time and resulted in Rouen emerging as the 6-5 winners on penalties.
