The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram Samuel Nartey George has called for the disbandment of the Black Stars after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage exit.
The Black Stars’ disappointing performance at the Africa Cup of Nations has sparked outrage and criticism, with many calling for major changes within the team and the administration. The team failed to secure a single victory during the tournament for the second time in Ivory Coast, leading to their elimination in the group stage.
Sam George has been vocal about his disapproval of the Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry’s financial investment in the team, especially given the economic challenges the country currently faces. He stressed the need for a strategic reevaluation of the team’s future.
“The Black Stars, let us disband the team. That is my view and I have held this view for long. It will not be the first time,” he said on Asempa FM.
“It was after we disbanded the Black Stars in 2001 and 2002, we went to the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup.
“Every time Kevin-Prince Boateng’s career drop, you want to play for the Black Stars. The Black Stars is and should be a place where you should feel the pride that you are wearing that jersey.”
Ghana’s hopes were dashed after finishing in third place in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde and managed back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, sealing their premature exit from the tournament.
